In anticipation of International Women’s Day next month, we are excited to announce an exciting new exhibition at the Crypt Gallery titled “The Spirit of Boudicca”.

Boudicca, queen of the Iceni people of Eastern Europe is known for being one of the fiercest female leaders in history. Spurred by the need for revenge for the oppression of the Iceni people by the Roman Empire, Boudicca led a revolt against the Roman’s. Despite the revolts eventual failure, her army destroyed the Roman towns of St Albans, Colchester and London. Boudicca remains to be a symbol of female power and liberation.

The exhibition will take place from 7th to 16th March, and is curated by Lee Sharrock

The featured artists are as follows; Chloe McCarrick, Daisy Campbell, Amy Gardner, Emma Loizides, Eva Yates, Kristjana S Williams, Lauren Baker, Lee Sharrock, Louise Richardson, Lucy Smallbone, Miranda Donovan, Nadine Talalla, Ottilia, Poppy Lennox, Toni Gallagher, Trish Wylie and Yurim Gough.

“My curation of the International Women’s Day AOAP auction is themed around Boudicca, Queen of the ancient British Iceni tribe. Boudica, meaning ‘Victorious Woman’, comes from Brythonic *boudi 'victory, win' and kā meaning 'having’. The brief I gave the artists was to create artworks inspired by Boudicca’s image, spirit or strength, depicting women from history or modern-day Warrior women who continue the fight for gender equality, independence and freedom, or women who have made a contribution to society in a public way, or in a more personal way on a family or friend level. It’s been so inspiring to see how each artist has interpreted the theme, some in abstract and some in more figurative ways.” Curator Lee Sharrock

The featured artists are creating artworks for the exhibition inspired by Boudicca’s image, spirit or strength, depicting women from history of modern-day Warrior women who continue the fight for gender equality, independence and freedom, or women who have contributed to society in a public way, or in a more personal way on a family or friend level.

This exhibition is not just a showcase of immense talent but a celebration of female power throughout the ages.

“Bouddicca’s legacy is a powerful reminder of the impact one determined leader can have, inspiring generations to stand up for their rights and beliefs. Her story teaches us about the enduring power of bravery and the importance of standing up against oppression.” - Chloe McCarrick

“When I was researching Boudicca, I was interested in her, prior to battle, invoking Andraste, the goddess of Victory, in order to guide her in her quest. These works are inspired by this invocation.”- Poppy Lennox

"Queen Boudicca immediately draws my mind to rebellion and triumph and ultimately justice for the greater good. Personally this gives me huge strength to speak my truths and beliefs." - Miranda Donovan

“I was inspired by an article I read in National Geographic. Growing up, my Icelandic Grandfather had a stack of these fascinating journals and I spent hours pouring over the contents. This artwork is a tribute to the female explorers who documented the botanical world before the advent of photography. At a time when men did most of the travelling and exploration, these women defied the norms and expectations of their age and pursued their passion for nature and adventure. A few years ago, I researched two of these remarkable women, Isabella Bird and Marianne North, who faced immense challenges and dangers in exploring and illustrating the flora of different continents. As a woman who grew up in Iceland, a country with a strong tradition of gender equality and female leadership, I wanted to honour these women and their legacy.”- Kristjana S Williams

Since 2019, Art on a Postcard (AOAP) has hosted an auction each International Women's Day (IWD) to support the invaluable work that The Hepatitis C Trust undertakes within women’s prisons. Additionally, AOAP is committed to creating a platform for female identifying artists, who currently represent just 7% of the art world, despite our progressively enlightened times. The 2024 Art on a Postcard International Women’s Day auction will be online from 27th February to 12th March 2024, encompassing International Women's Day on the 8th of March. A joint show, featuring works curated by each invited curator, will be held at a central London location, whilst the Queen Boudicca-themed postcards in the auction curated by Lee Sharrock will be exhibited at the Crypt Gallery in Norwich.

The curator and Norwich School’s Andy Campbell will also donate a percentage of sales from the Art on a Postcard auction to Dawn’s New Horizon, a Norwich-based charity that helps women escape from domestic abuse and start again: https://dawnsnewhorizon.org.uk

ING Discerning Eye Exhibition 2023

17 November – 31 December

Mall Galleries and online

Selected by a star-studded panel from a UK-wide competition which attracted 6,500 entries, the ING Discerning Eye exhibition showcases 628 artworks by 387 artists.

Proudly supported by ING for 25 years, the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition is one of the longest-running commercial art sponsorships in the UK. Since it began in 1999, 11,000 works by 4,000 artists have been exhibited, £290,000 has been awarded in prize money, and over £1 million worth of art has been sold on behalf of the artists.

The ING Discerning Eye exhibition is unique for its focus on small-scale works and its selection process. Each selector makes their choices independently, resulting in the curation of six small exhibitions within the whole.

Some of the artwork comes from artists who are personally invited by a selector, and the remainder is selected through an open submission process, allowing emerging artists to exhibit alongside more established names.

Free to visit at Mall Galleries from 17 to 26 November 2023, and online until 31 December 2023 here.

The 2023 selectors were:

· Tony Adams, Former footballer and Collector

· Eliza Gluckman, Director, Government Art Collection

· Chris Levine, Artist

· Peju Oshin, Critic, Curator, Writer and Lecturer

· Ian "H" Watkins, Singer and Collector

· Julian Wild, Artist and Lecturer

MORE ABOUT THE ING DISCERNING EYE EXHIBITION:

The ING Discerning Eye annual exhibition is a show of small, domestic scale, works independently selected by six prominent figures from different areas of the art world: two artists, two collectors and two critics.

The selectors choose both from the publically submitted works and works by personally invited artists. Each selector's choice is theirs own alone and is hung in separate sections to give each its own distinctive identity.

The impression emerges of six small exhibitions within the whole.

It provides a rare opportunity for works by lesser-known artists to be hung alongside contributions from internationally recognised names.

The only restrictions are that the pieces must be for sale, the artists UK based, the size of the work (50cm in any dimension) and that the selectors choose at least 25% of their section from the open submission.

The annual exhibition has been generously supported by our exhibition sponsor ING since 1999.

The Self Portrait Prize is a biennial art prize that celebrates the practice of self-portraiture

This year’s £10,000 prize, selected from over 1800 entries, was won by Colin Davidson, an internationally renowned portrait artist who lives and works near Belfast, Northern Ireland. Colin’s portrait sitters have included Brad Pitt, Ed Sheeran, Liam Neeson, Sir Kenneth Branagh, Lady Mary Peters, Markéta Irglová, Mark Knopfler and Seamus Heaney.

The Prize, established in 2011, is the only art competition of its kind to focus exclusively on self-portraiture, and was inspired by Ruth Borchard, who between 1958 and 1971 created a collection of paintings dedicated exclusively to self-portraiture. With a small budget, limiting herself to just  21 guineas for each picture, she collected one hundred self-portraits. The rich and varied collection includes work by many well-known artists including Michael Ayrton, Anne Redpath, Euan Uglow, Ithell Colquhoun. and Keith Vaughan.

ART REFRAMED

We’re a global gathering of creative thinkers, game changers and pleasure seekers sharing emerging talent and unforgettable experiences. Set against the backdrop of the world’s biggest cities, each of our fairs is different. We combine boundary-pushing yet always affordable works with immersive installations, performances and the odd tattoo or taxidermy class thrown in for good measure.

Art isn’t confined to convention or rule, and how you enjoy it shouldn’t be either.

A place where art feels accessible, where everyone fits in, where the experience exists outside of four white walls and the same four artists?

That’s not normal. That’s The Other Art Fair.

Esprits libres encourages us to take a fresh look at unique, authentic, surprising artistic expressions. It is an invitation and a challenge to creativity and the collective imagination, privileging figurative and narrative art with an surrealist bent. The exhibition is based on these expressions’ power to transcend academic strictures and bring all generations together.

No school, no line of theory, no concept is claimed: the exhibition transcribes a free state of mind, an internal rhythm of creation,
a stand taken in the world.
Since 2010, HEY! Modern art & pop culture
has given European visibility to an international community of artists working to defy conventions, redefining the “good” and
“bad taste” of today. An art long regarded
as “alternative”, seldom exhibited but created by thousands of artists throughout the world, off the critical and market radar. Whether their esthetics are based on popular culture or deliberately distanced from academic thought, this heterogeneous grouping is distinguished by its character: narrative, often surreal, and almost always figurative. Its respect for pop culture and rejection of standard formats also shape its direction. The fine arts are not denied, but quoted and sometimes appropriated;
folk, pop, and street arts are reevaluated and revalorized; unique and outsider arts– “instinctive works, in every case deconditioned from the learned” as Alain Bourbonnais described them to Jean Dubuffet1–are brought into the fold.

Yurim Gough ‘VainEgo’: A Solo Exhibition at APT Gallery Curated by Lee Sharrock

The exhibition curated by Lee Sharrock will feature a series of 108 ceramic heads described by Gough as an ‘Army of me’, as well as film, drawings and photographic prints. All the featured works were made during a 6 year period which was triggered by Yurim Gough’s breast cancer diagnosis in 2016, and her subsequent treatment and recovery. During this challenging time, Gough sought solace in her work, expressing the emotions and experiences of her cancer treatment through life drawing and ceramics.

Excited to announce a group exhibition curated by Lee Sharrock with west London gallery at @99Projectslondon.
Featured artists; Aaron Bevan Bailey, Ann-Marie James, Bruce French, Eva Yates, Josephine Zentner, Katrina Russell Adams, Kay Gasei, Kristjana S Williams, Lauren Baker, LUAP, Misia-O’, Poppy Lennox, Redbellboy, Remi Rough, Sarah Emily Porter, Simon McCheung, Trish Wylie & Yurim Gough

‘Rebirth’ is a group exhibition featuring some of the UK’s most exciting upcoming contemporary artists, juxtaposed with more established artists to provoke a visual dialogue with the theme of Rebirth. The exhibition runs from Friday 4th to Sunday 27th March and features paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, and ceramics.

Over two years have passed since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, during which time we were confined to our homes due to lockdowns, prompting a reevaluation of the things that really matter, and a rediscovery and renewed appreciation of the healing power of nature during our daily walks or time spent in the garden.

As the days grow longer, sunlight and the gradual emergence of snowdrops promise the imminent arrival of spring, and with spring comes hope for an end to the pandemic, which makes the theme of ‘Rebirth’ seem like an appropriate one for the exhibition at 99 Projects.

Press Release

“She could have done it differently of course; the colour could have been thinned and faded; the shapes etherealised; that was how Paunceforte would have seen it. But then she did not see it like that. She saw the colour burning on a framework of steel; the light of a butterfly’s wing lying upon the arches of a cathedral. Of all that only a few random marks scrawled upon the canvas remained. And it would never be seen; never be hung even, and there was Mr Tansley whispering in her ear, “Women can’t paint, women can’t write ...” (Virginia Woolf, The Lighthouse).

The refrain of Mr Tansley whispering “Women can’t paint, women can’t write ...” echoes throughout Virginia Woolf’s To The Lighthouse. The book itself, widely acclaimed as one of the finest 20th century novels, is a defiance of the latter statement. Likewise, Vanessa Bell, prominent Bloomsbury painter and Woolf’s sister, controverted the former with her astounding body of work. Not only did she prove that women can paint, but famed for her designs and textiles, Bell demonstrated the practices and skills of female artists extend well beyond the media of paint.

In 2019, the Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Prize Exhibition saw an extraordinary range of media used by female artists to depict the Self. Ranging from knitted acrylics and MRI scans to wooden structures and ceramics, the 2019 Exhibition reveals the ways in which this legacy of innovative, multimedia women artists has continued into the 21st century. A few of these works have been selected for this Online Exclusive Exhibition.

HIX ART are excited to present Beyond the Veil - a multi-disciplinary exhibition featuring new, collaborative artworks by London-based milliner Victoria Grant and artist Yurim Gough.

Though seemingly hailing from differing parts of the artistic world, this pair have much in common. Both can be found incorporating nods to their heritage in their work, and both express a serious talent for embellishing the human form. As a milliner, Grant has spent her illustrious career creating signature hats full of attitude and glamour, while Gough has made a return to art from a career in design, and uses handmade ceramic bowls as the canvas for her intricate life drawings.

Upon discovering Gough at The Other Art Fair, Grant felt an instant affinity with her work. The subject of performance runs deeply through both’s practice, and Grant felt “an electric connection to Yurim’s work, joy at its beauty, and a powerful sense of harmony”. This collaboration of the two allows for a deeper look into the themes of play and gender fluidity and serves to showcase the lively merging of two divergent artistic practices.

In Beyond the Veil, the spirit, curiosity and craftsmanship of these two artists combine in the form of three brand-new, collaborative artworks. The decorative headpieces that Grant and Gough have co-created are an eclectic mix of high-fashion, tradition, the surreal, and the cinematic. Gough’s handmade ceramics are adorned with her raw and complex figure drawings, and blend strikingly with the wealth of textures and mediums which Grant brings to her craft. The resulting works make for compelling, stand alone pieces, and raise interesting questions around identity, gender and the roles we play. Each a character in their own right, these colourful and multifarious creations take compelling features from two separate worlds, and combine them together to give birth to an entirely new concept.

The show also features each artists solo work, which offers which offers a greater context for the way in which the pair have united their individual styles and techniques to create these new collaborative works.

Victoria Grant is a British milliner, based in London. Victoria launched her Notting Hill atelier in 2007, and has since become known as the ‘celebrity hatter’, after her work crowned many a famous head. Influenced heavily by British culture, Grants hats convey a witty sense of playfulness, and ceremony.

Yurim Gough is a British-based artist, originally from South Korea. After emigrating to England in 2007, she returned to art after a decade long career of designing shoes, finding herself drawn to her cultural roots in the form of ceramics. Her practice now sees her moulding the bowls she creates in her hands, and then drawing directly on to them, “with no plan, never changing a line”. She then overlays imagery on select pieces, creating a complex and often intense narrative around the individual portraits.

14February 2020, Yurim Gough

After emigrating to England in 2007 from Korea where she was a designer, Yurim come back to art starting with life drawing and experimenting with other media.

14/02/2020

She found herself drawn to her cultural roots in ceramics and mixing the two mediums, drawing straight onto the surface of each piece. Life drawing joins the model's pose to the contoured surface of the piece – the lines from the model are communicated through the rough texture to the fired hand-built stoneware with a ceramic pencil and the jagged lines softened under glaze. Her vases are like many bowls coming together inverted into sculptures. You can see more of her work at http://yurimgough.com/

“One should project the imagination, not just expose the material. This is what makes it art…creating into the material, art beyond technique, beyond life.” – Paul Valéry

Yurim Gough is not a potter but a ceramic artist who uses the medium as a language to cross the boundaries of cultures, to question the boundaries between craft and fine art and also to expand the boundaries of ceramics. She leaves the utilitarian values in her ceramics as secondary not merely for the sake of aesthetics but for deeply felt and poignant ideas about our lives as individuals.

Henry Moore said that sculpture must have life in it. Yurim’s ceramic art is certainly imbued with life, not as a mere connotation but a pure expression of it. This is because she moulds the bowls in her hands and then draws straight onto them, with no plan, never changing a line. Her vases are like many bowls coming together, somehow inverted into sculptures. Drawing directly onto these from a life model in front of her, Yurim allows the energy and emotional state of the subject to lead the way in both capturing the moment but also the essence of the individual, thus creating the narrative of the artwork. The lines are drawn with a ceramic pencil onto the rough texture of the fired hand-built stoneware. For some pieces, imagery is overlaid on the drawings and in others we find little cracks and ‘sawn’ parts, reminiscent of the Japanese Kintsugi method whereby broken pieces of pottery are mended to symbolise our humanity; each with its own story and beauty, thanks to the unique cracks formed when the object breaks, as if they were wounds that leave different marks on each of us.

Yurim’ s drawing is scratched out with an energy that suggests the artist’s feelings towards her subjects, including herself. They are not soft, idealised figures but a vigorous embrace of real flesh captured in a moment of time to suggest narratives, imagined or real. There is a raw sexuality and a kind of human anxiety that is brought to the surface through assured line and direct expression. A whole of human life seems to fits into a bowl in Yurim’s delicate work. Teasing stockings and high heels, along with fashion accessories, open or crossed legs, are frank about their purpose. The familiarity with which she depicts the naked body makes the eroticism thought-provoking.

Identity and beauty are important subtexts in Yurim’s art, where symbols of contemporary life are aestheticized and used as a point of departure for a truly artistic act. This affords her the freedom to self-examine our place in society and our contemporary identity that is so often ruled by postmodern self-interest or blind consumerism. There is irony, directness and fragility in her art but first and foremost, we are faced with an unapologetic sincerity which leaves a deep and lasting impression.
